Diversity Visa program

What is the Diversity Visa Program?

The Diversity Visa program is a bipartisan program created in 1990 to encourage immigration from underrepresented countries. It provides an opportunity for a limited number of immigrants from countries with historically low immigration rates to come to the United States.

Eligibility:

People from countries eligible for the diversity visa enter what is commonly called the diversity lottery.

The applicant must show that they have:

  • Passed a thorough security and criminal background check, has

  • Either a high-school education or it's equivalent,

  • And at least two years of work experience in an occupation that requires at least two years of training or experience.

Lately, it has been a hot topic in the media, and we want to set facts right.

Cuts to the Diversity Visa program are essentially cuts to families thriving in the United States.

The Situation

The Diversity Visa program provides an opportunity for legal immigration to immigrants from low-admission countries who would otherwise have no pathway for doing so through existing family, employment or humanitarian-based channels.

The program allows for 50,000 “green cards” awarded per fiscal year.

The Trump Administration has submitted proposals through congress and the White House to eliminate the Diversity Visa program despite its success.

The Ask

  1. Protect the Diversity Visa Program:  The Diversity Visa program has been a successful program, any changes would  greatly impact communities of color, since at  least 22,000 of those normally go to Africans and 9,000 to Asians.

  2. Defend all Legal Migration for Black Immigrants: The Trump administration has reduced refugee resettlement by 75%, setting 2019’s admissions goal at 30,000 – the lowest level in U.S. history. This is significant as attempts to funnel DV green cards into other areas of legal immigration that are under massive attack in their own right, separate and apart from DV visa program may very much prove futile.
